This heavily oxidised, dark Oolong tea is from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian, China, literally translated to mean Big Red Robe’. There are many legends as to the reason why it was gifted with this name. The most well-known is a tale in which the tea cured the mother of a Ming dynasty emperor from her illness. The emperor then had the bushes cloaked in red robes. Presently, six of the original bushes, dating back to the Song dynasty, still grow on a rock on the Wuyi Mountains. The tea embodies the characteristics of the mountain ranges, offering layers of earthy notes. The tea brews a deep red hue and carries a chocolatey flavour, blended with muscatel notes — a smooth, rounded drink.
